We’re celebrating #WorldNatureConservationDay 🌱

Delta is located within the Fraser River Estuary, which is a major stopover site for millions of beautiful migratory birds. Thousands of these birds flock to nearby farmland for food and shelter throughout the winter months. Supporting farmers who provide habitat is at the core of what we do at DF&WT 🦆

Attention farmers! Last chance to enroll in the 20 Attention farmers! Last chance to enroll in the 2022 Grassland Set-aside Program (GLSA). DM us or call our office at 604-940-3392 if you would like to participate with additional fields, or for more information about the program 🌱

Our GLSA program offers an annual $400/acre cost-share payment to farmers to plant a mixture of grasses and broad-leaved plants on their fields for up to 4 years.

Why plant a GLSA?
- Improve soil health by adding organic matter and enhancing soil structure
- Provide critical grassland habitat for local wildlife
- Support birds with food resources and nesting habitat

This initiative is made possible through generous support from: Delta Agricultural Society, BC Waterfowl Society, Habitat Stewardship Program, Canadian Wildlife Service, Farmland Awareness Campaign, Tsawwassen Golf Fund, @habitatconservationtrust @ducksunlimitedcanada @cityofdeltabc @whc_canada @cityofrichmondbc @eco.canada @iafbc

With this weekend’s heat wave, the weather has f With this weekend’s heat wave, the weather has finally turned! But what a difficult spring it has been for Delta farmers, one that will be remembered for years.

Last year, the Lower Mainland experienced a fall with record-high precipitation levels. This spring, record-low temperatures and high rainfall made it very challenging to dry and warm up the soil.

“The whole agricultural chain is challenged right now - especially in our area … we’re starting to play russian roulette with the weather,” says Jack Bates. He farms 400 acres in Delta, producing blueberries, potatoes, and corn and raising dairy cows.

Spring is a critical time in the farming calendar. Soil is prepped, seeds and seedlings are planted, and many varieties of fruit are pollinated. This year, those three essential functions were stifled, translating to lower yields, less local fruit and vegetables at the farmer’s markets and a significant decrease in farming income.

“In the blueberry industry, some of the crops actually shut down,” says Jack. Many fields in Delta remained unplanted until recently, and some will remain bare for the entire season. For farmers like Jack who try to have their crops in the ground by mid-May at the latest, a 4-week delay will have significant consequences.

Jack says this is why buying local produce is more important now than ever.
“It takes a little extra effort on the consumer to find local product. But I think at the end of the day, it's probably rewarding because it's better quality and better flavour.”

Let’s show our local farmers how much we value their hard work and perseverance - #supportlocal #farmingmatters
Happy #PollinatorWeek! @pollinatorpartnership has Happy #PollinatorWeek! @pollinatorpartnership has launched this campaign to address the declining populations of pollinators. Pollinators are a crucial component of a stable food supply, as farmers rely on the help of pollinators to yield healthy crops.

By enhancing floral resources on farmland, our Grassland Set-Aside, Hedgerow and Grass Margin Programs provide habitat for pollinators through partnerships with farmers in Delta. Through research partnerships, DF&WT continues to explore how pollinators use on-farm environments.

We love the free online seminars currently being o We love the free online seminars currently being offered through @wildfarmalliance! They keep us updated with the latest research related to birds on farms. There is so much to know!

A recent session discussed the idea of a "landscape of fear" through the introduction of birds of prey." This ecological model suggests that the possible presence of a predator is effective enough to alter the patterns of common farm pests. In other words, the predator reduces pest pressure by consuming the pest population, but the predator's presence alone is also enough to make pests less likely to want to live in that environment. 🐀

Barn owls are an example of a highly effective pest management specialist, with one family consuming 3,000-4,000 rodents every year. Barn owls are also attracted to farm fields located next to grasslands, which is perfect for Delta farmers. DF&WT partners with farmers through our Grassland Set-Aside Stewardship Program to plant grasses and broad-leaved plants on farm fields. Many of these landscapes are frequented by barn owls 🦉
