The DFWT Blueberry Rest Program is now open 🌱 If The DFWT Blueberry Rest Program is now open 🌱

If you’ve removed blueberry bushes due to scorch virus, this program offers funding support to help restore your soil.

By planting a diverse mix of flowers, grasses, and broad-leaved plants, and allowing fields to rest for up to four years, growers can rebuild soil health, support pollinators, and enhance carbon storage and water infiltration.

Participants receive $500 per acre annually for each year the field remains in the program. Contact us at programs@dfwt.ca if you have any questions or visit the link in our bio to apply.

New applications are treated on a first-come, first-served basis, so submit your agreement as soon as possible!

Funding for the Blueberry Rest Set-Aside Program is provided by the governments of Canada and British Columbia under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Salt & Harrow is a 13-acre organic farm, operated Salt & Harrow is a 13-acre organic farm, operated by Seann Dory and Suzy Keown. They grow over 50 varieties of vegetables, fruits, legumes and herbs year-round. Established in 2015 on Vancouver Island, they now grow on family farmland in South Delta. Suzy says that “although our farm has relocated and seen many changes over the last decade, I think the only thing that has truly changed is the world around us. We still just farm as best we can and are grateful for the opportunity to do so”.

“As a coastal farm, the wind is one of our biggest headaches and it rarely relents. Being a farm in Delta, we are so lucky to have access to the many programs available through the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DFWT).” Suzy and Seann had long-term plans to plant hedgerows on the farm, but the Hedgerow Program DFWT offers provided the support needed to execute those plans much sooner than they anticipated. “The hedgerow program is a game changer for us because the hedgerow acts as a buffer alongside our organically managed fields, provides pollinator/beneficial insect habitat, and is a natural wind barrier.”

In the fall of 2025, a native plant hedgerow was installed along the edge of one of Salt & Harrow’s fields through the DFWT Hedgerow Stewardship Program. A diverse mix of thirteen native species were planted, including many shrubs which produce flowers and berries, and several deciduous trees.

Suzy and Seann are interested in implementing other stewardship practices on their farm as well, “for example planting floral field margins to increase the beneficial habitat in our unused spaces. Pollinators and other beneficials are such an integral part of what we do”.

“We're not trying to change the world, but, when we make decisions, our main goal is simple; to make a living doing something that doesn't hurt us or others. That applies to the ecosystems around us as well” says Suzy.
